How Long Should a Product Video Be?
How long should a product video be? Sensible lengths by placement, what actually decides it, and why most product videos run too long.
Short answer: shorter than you think, and the right number depends entirely on where it sits. A video doing a job on a product page has a different length from one introducing a brand on a home page, and neither has much to do with how long you spent making it.
How long should a product video be?
There is no universal figure, but there are sensible ranges by placement:
- Product page or listing video. Fifteen to thirty seconds. The shopper is already interested; the video exists to settle one remaining doubt — scale, material, how it assembles, what is in the box.
- Home page hero. Ten to twenty seconds, looping. It is scene-setting, not explanation, and it competes with the visitor's reason for arriving.
- Paid social. Under fifteen seconds, with the point made in the first three. Attention is rented here, not given.
- How-it-works or assembly. As long as the task takes, and no longer. This is the one case where sixty seconds can be correct.
The twenty-second piece we made — described in our guide to making product videos with AI — was built for the top of a page, and twenty seconds was about right for a loop that had to introduce a brand rather than explain a product.
What actually decides the length
Not the format, and not a best-practice number. Two things:
What the shopper still does not know. Write that down first. If it is one thing, you need fifteen seconds. If it is four things, you need either a longer video or — usually better — four shorter ones.
Whether anything has to be demonstrated. Showing a thing working takes the time it takes. Everything else compresses.
If you cannot say in a sentence what the video is for, length is not your problem yet.
The first three seconds
Most product video is abandoned in the opening moments, so the opening cannot be a logo animation or a slow push onto a blank backdrop. Lead with the product, in use or in context, and let the branding arrive later.
This is also where the length argument usually resolves itself: a video that earns the first three seconds gets twenty, and one that does not would not have been watched at ten.
Muted viewing changes the answer
Most of this is watched with no sound, which means the message travels as on-screen text — and text needs dwell time. A caption nobody can finish reading is worse than no caption.
Practically, that sets a floor: each line needs long enough to read comfortably, so the number of things you want to say sets a minimum length whether you like it or not. It is another argument for saying fewer things.
How to cut a long one down
- Delete the intro. Whatever it is, it is not earning its seconds.
- Cut to one message. Anything secondary becomes its own video.
- Trim the holds, not the content. Most overlong videos are correctly structured and too slow.
- Lose the outro. The call to action is the page the video sits on, not a closing card.
- Watch it muted on a phone and cut anything you skipped past.
Frequently asked questions
How long should an Amazon product video be? Fifteen to thirty seconds suits most listing videos, because the shopper is already on the page and looking to resolve one specific doubt. Longer is defensible when the product genuinely needs demonstrating — assembly, installation, a technique — but Amazon has its own length limits per placement, so check the current specification before you edit to a target.
How long should a Shopify product video be? Similar for the product page: fifteen to thirty seconds. A home page hero works better shorter, around ten to twenty on a loop, partly for attention and partly because a hero video carries a page speed cost worth keeping small.
Is a 60-second product video too long? For a product page, usually yes, unless the whole minute is demonstration. For a how-it-works video it can be exactly right. Judge it by whether anything in the minute could be removed without losing the point.
Does video length affect conversion? It plausibly does, but we have no measurement of our own to offer and will not quote someone else's. If it matters to your store, test two lengths of the same video on the same page and watch your own numbers.
