Why Is My Shopify Store Slow on Mobile?
Why is my Shopify store slow on mobile? The usual causes, how to find which one is yours, and what to fix before paying anyone to fix it.
Most Shopify stores are slower on mobile than their owners realise, because the person checking is on a desktop with good broadband and a warm cache. The customer is on a phone, on mobile data, arriving cold.
The gap is not a rounding error either. Mobile runs on less CPU, over a slower connection, and every script has to be parsed on that weaker device.
Why is my Shopify store slow on mobile?
Five causes account for most of it, roughly in order of how often they turn out to be the problem:
- Apps injecting scripts into every page, including apps you no longer use.
- Images that are larger than the slot they render into.
- A heavy hero — a video or a large banner competing with your largest contentful paint.
- Theme bloat, from unused sections, sliders and fonts.
- Third-party tags — chat widgets, review widgets, analytics, pixels.
Notice what is not on that list: Shopify's own hosting. It is rarely the constraint, which is why "move platform" is almost never the answer to this question.
What the numbers can look like
Worth showing a real set rather than a hypothetical. On AWEX (awex.shop), a motorsport gear store on Shopify where we placed a hero video on the home page, PageSpeed Insights reported a mobile Performance score of 43, with LCP at 14.1 seconds. Desktop Performance came in at 57 on the same page.
Two things that figure does not tell you. We have not confirmed which element is the LCP, so we are not attributing the score to the video or to anything else. And we have no before-and-after, so this is a snapshot rather than a measurement of cause.
What it does illustrate is the gap between desktop and mobile on the same page, and that a store can look perfectly healthy to its owner while scoring like that on a phone. Our guide to adding a product video to a Shopify home page covers what to check before and after publishing one.
Find out which cause is yours
Guessing is expensive here. Three steps, cheapest first:
Run PageSpeed Insights on mobile, not desktop. Use a real product page and the home page, not just the home page. Note the LCP element it names — that single line tells you more than the score does.
Open the network panel on a throttled connection. Sort by size. The culprits are usually obvious and usually not what you expected.
Audit your apps. List everything installed, then everything you actually use. The difference is dead weight, and uninstalling does not always remove the injected code — check the theme for leftover snippets.
What to fix, in order
- Remove apps you do not use, and clear their leftover snippets from the theme.
- Fix the LCP element — whatever PageSpeed named. Usually that means serving a correctly sized image, not preloading a video, and letting a light poster image carry the first paint.
- Resize images to their rendered size. A 2000px image in a 600px slot is the most common single waste on a Shopify store.
- Defer what is not needed for first paint. Chat widgets and review carousels do not need to load before the page is usable.
- Cut unused theme sections and fonts. Two weights of one typeface is usually enough.
- Re-measure after each change, so you learn which ones mattered.
Our Shopify SEO checklist covers the speed items alongside the rest of the on-page work, since the two overlap more than people expect.
When it is the theme rather than the content
Sometimes the honest answer is that the theme is the problem: an older or heavily customised one carrying years of additions, where every fix fights the template. At that point a lean rebuild costs less than another six months of patching — and the signs a store needs a redesign are usually visible before the speed scores are.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Shopify store slow on mobile but fine on desktop? Mobile devices have less processing power and usually a slower connection, so the same JavaScript that parses instantly on a laptop takes far longer on a phone. Script-heavy stores show the widest gap, which is why an app audit is the first thing worth doing.
Does Shopify hosting make stores slow? Rarely. Shopify's infrastructure is not usually the constraint — the weight of apps, images and third-party scripts loaded onto the page is. Changing platform to fix a speed problem almost always moves the same weight somewhere else.
Do Shopify speed apps work? Be sceptical. Adding another script to solve a script problem is a strange trade, and most of what these apps do — lazy loading, deferring, preloading — a good theme already does or can be configured to do. Measure before and after if you try one.
Does mobile speed affect Shopify SEO? Core Web Vitals are a ranking signal and Google assesses mobile, so a slow mobile experience works against you twice: in ranking and in the conversion rate of the traffic you already have.
If your store is slow and you would rather someone found out why than guessed, that diagnosis is part of our Shopify development work.
